Management Practice

LEAP supports two different Management Practices: Woodlot and OtherForestry.  You can either type in these labels or use the drop down menu when editing the variable to select one of these two options.

Woodlot

The Woodlot management practice is used to simulate formally managed wood production where trees are planted and then harvested on a specific rotation regime.  The cutting of wood on these land types is not affected by the demand for wood, and is driven solely by the regime specified in the Fraction Harvested life cycle profile.

When using this type of practice, LEAP will track the hectares of woodlots created in each year through any land conversions occurring in a scenario, and will then keep track of the wood growth and wood harvested for each separate "vintage" of trees planted.

OtherForestry

The OtherForestry practice is used to simulate informally managed land types in which wood stocks may be cut based on the demand for wood in each region, thus allowing you to simulate processes of deforestation.  When using this approach, you can specify the starting unit stocks of wood and the future unit growth (annual increments) of wood for each land type.  You can also specify the accessibility fraction (the fraction of the area of a particular land-type that is accessible to being cut).  You can also specify maximum unit stocks (to represent the maximum equilibrium density of forests) and  minimum unit stocks (so as to limit cutting of wood, which may be appropriate for some land types).

Note: This variable is visible for the land type branches shown below relevant wood resources (under the high level Resources tree branch).
