    Dear Charles Heaps.

I am student from Estonia and for my research I use LEAP model as preferred model selected to elaborate the scenarios of development of Estonian energy system. I would like to thank you very much for LEAP model and technical support that you give! But my question is related to comparing LEAP with the other models like Markal, EFOM, MESAP and MIDAS. I need to know the prices of compared models. Unfortunately, I don't get any answers from internet. Maybe you will be so kind and help me. Do you have some ideas about price of these models (EFOM, MESAP and MIDAS)? I know only Markal prices ($3 300-$15 000 depending on type of institution) and about others nothing.

Do you have some experience of working on other models?
I would be appreciate for any kind of information.

    Best regards,
    Nadezda.

    Hi,

I am not sure if can help much on your questions. I do not know to what extent the models you mentioned are still being developed, and if so a) whether they are made generally available to the public, b) whether technical support is available to users, and c) what they might cost.

My understanding is that the ETSAP community has been working for a longt time to develop a new model (TIMES) that combines aspects of the various different versions of MARKAL and EFOM. But I am not clear if development of EFOM itself is now discontinued. I believe that work does still continue on some versions of MARKAL. I know at one time that the MESAP system was also being integrated with MARKAL but I do not know the status of that. I suggest therefore that you start by sending a message to ETSAP members. The ETSAP web site is here:

    http://www.etsap.org

    or you can email: support@etsap.org

I'm afraid I know nothing about MIDAS. All I could find was this:

    http://tinyurl.com/o8pmth

It seems to be a model that was developed by Prof. P Capros at the university of Athens. I believe he is also the lead author of PRIMES, which is perhaps the leading model of the energy system of the European Union (similar in scope to the NEMS model in the US). I wonder if MIDAS might be an earlier geneation of model similar in purpose to PRIMES?

Perhaps other members can comment if they know better?

Finally, I just want to make sure that you have also seen this page that has pointers to various models:

    http://www.energycommunity.org/default.asp?action=71

    I hope this helps,

    Charlie
