in the electricity generation module,i set the maximum avaliability of all the processes to be 100%,and the planning reserve margin is 20. then i check the required reserve margin in the result view, the value is zero, why? waht kind of factors that affect the value of required reserve margin?

    Hi Qilan,

I think you are getting a zero answer because you set availability to be equal to 100%. It is very rare that power plants have an availability factors that high. Some solar and wind power plants can have such high availabilities, but also have capacity credits that are far below 100% due to resource availability. As long as one technology has a availability that is not 100%, you will see a non-zero value for required reserve margin. Below are documentation and further resources.

+ Required Reserve Margin: the reserve margin needed to fully meet peak requirements.

+ Actual Reserve Margin. The actual reserve margin due to LEAP making capacity additions. NB: since capacity additions are discrete ("lumpy"), the actual reserve margin will generally be greater than or equal to the actual reserve margin (assuming that endogenous capacity additions have been enabled).

    Hi Tory,
Thank you for your help! Now the availability is not 100,i get the non-zero value for required reserve margin. But what is the correct tend of the required reserve margin? Is it to be gradually declining? But mine is increasing step by step,i think it is not right. Can you give me some advice?

The trend of your reserve margin will depend on many factors of the data you have entered in analysis view. An increasing required reserve margin could mean an increasing peak power requirement over time or that you are adding more capacity than is needed to meet demands over time.

I recommend looking at the other results you are seeing (e.g. Transformation: Peak Power Requirements and Transformation: Capacity) to see if the overall results story makes sense considering the data you entered.
