    Dear Tory,

I used LEAP for scenario analysis but the results do not make sense to me.

    1. The results of the "Demand: Energy Demand Final Units" shows 58 MTOE in 2015 for a BAU scenario, but the historical data of 2010 is 71.1 MTOE. Because it is the BAU scenario, the number of 2015 should be larger than the number of 2010.

    2. I checked numbers shown in the "Energy Balance" and the "total demand" numbers of 2015 in the Energy Balance sheet is 81.4 MTOE, larger than the 2010 data (which make more sense)

    So my questions are:

    1. What the differences between the "Results" and the "Energy Balance"?

    2. Could I know the calculation procedure of the "Results"? (I try to figure out what the problem is)

    Thank you for advanced.
It is very important for me since I use LEAP for my dissertation but now I cannot expalin the results. :(

    Sincerely,
    Katty

    Hi Katty,

There should not be a difference in numbers, but since the formats of displaying results are different it is possible that you are reading the results incorrectly.

To get the same results for total demand in units of MTOE, you should do the following:

    In Results View:
    - Highlight the "Demand" branch in the tree
    - Choose Show: Demand: Energy Demand Final Units
    - Choose the BAU Scenario, and All Fuels
    - Change the units to MTOE

    In Energy Balance View:
    - Choose the BAU scenario, correct year, and units of MTOE
    - Look at the Total Demand row at the bottom of the energy balance
    - Compare to the number in the Total column to ensure that you are looking at results for all fuels

If you do this and the numbers still do not match, please send me the data set to leap @sei-us.org and I will take a look.

    Best,

    Tory

    Thank you so much, Tory.

After I fllowed your instruction, I correctly read the results.

I have another question (I can creat a new post if it will be more helpful to other users who encounter similar questions)

For the "Transformation" part, I only input information of "electricity generation". In this situation, in my "Results" view, can I choose"Demand:Energy Demand Primary Units"?

    Thank you!

    Sincerely,
    Katty

    Hi Katty,

Yes, the Energy Demand Primary Units option will allocate the primary fuels used in demand branches (e.g. the coal used to produce electricity in households).

Primary units results are only available if you go to the General: Basic Parameters scope screen and check the box marked "allocate primary energy and Transformation emissions back to demands". When showing in primary units, LEAP shows the primary energy requirement implications of the levels of domestic consumption at one or more demand branch.

So for example, if you click on a household/refrigeration branch you will see the primary energy required to make the electricity used in refrigerators (e.g. coal, hydro, etc. instead of electricity). In this calculation LEAP assumes that each final fuel gets a proportion of the average mix of supply side processes in each year. It does not distinguish between demand side technologies that operate at on- and off-peak, perhaps with a different mix of supply side technologies.

For more information, please see LEAP's help files:

    Best,

    Tory

    Dear Tory,

I can not find the "allocate primary energy and Transformation emissions back to demands" at the Basic Parameters scope screen. My LEAP version is 2012.0.0.49.

    Thank you!

    Hi Yuan,

You're quite correct, this feature has actually been removed from current versions of LEAP. We are consider re-implementing the feature, since there is still some interest in using it.

    Take care,

    Taylor
