    Hi there,

I am almost finished Exercise 3, but am stuck because my results for the Energy Balance do not line up with the Training Exercise results. Mainly, in the Electricity column, I have the same value (58 million GJ), however my results have the electricity all being Imports whereas the Training Exercise lists the 58 million GJ in the Electricity Generation row. Likewise my Oil Products are all listed in the Imports row, whereas in the Training Exercise they are listed in the Oil Refining row.

Can anyone help me figure out where I am going wrong?

    Thanks,
    Madeleine

    Hi Madeleine,

If the value is the same, but the outputs of the module are zero, it sounds like your demand branches match the training exercises (as the requirements are the same for the transformation module), but that there is a mistake in the specific transformation module. (By default LEAP will assume that you want to import fuels if they are not produced within the Area. In this case, LEAP does not think that you are producing electricity or oil products, so these are getting imported.)

I would recommend going module by module to check. In the electricity generation module, for example, go to the Results view and check first to see if you are building capacity. Check the Show: Transformation: Capacity chart to see if you have MW of capacity in the future. If No, then go back and check your exogenous and endogenous capacity variables. If Yes, then check to see if you are using, or dispatching, that capacity by going to the Show: Transformation: Outputs. If you see no generation, or outputs, after 2010, then you need to go back and check your dispatch rules.

Using this kind of systematic approach you should be able to diagnose where the model is not behaving as you would expect.

    Best,

    Tory

Thanks Tory. The systematic approach for debugging is helpful.

Another question for you- in Section 5.8 of the Tutorial, the results of the energy demand of the various scenarios are shown minus the BAU scenario. How is this graph produced? How do you subtract the BAU scenario from the Diesel, fewer SUV, etc... scenarios?

    Thanks,
    Madeleine

    Hello Madeleine,

In Results view, click on the More button in the second toolbar attached to the chart or table.

The select "Show Differences" vs. "Business as Usual".

You can also "Show Avoided" which is another interesting way of looking at things.

    I hope this helps!

    Charlie

P.S. I'm sorry to report that Tory has now departed from SEI, - she is heading off to MIT to do a Masters in Energy Policy. We will miss her! Stay tuned for news on staff at SEI's LEAP program.
