    Hello,

As a beginner, I have two questions:

    Q1:
OSeMOSYS provides the model in TXT (normal and short version) and a data file which is related to the fictive country "UTOPIA."
I would like to know if it's possible to import UTOPIA.dat in LEAP? If yes how? If not what is the best way (software) to visualize the results?

    Q2:
LEAP provides many examples such as FREEDONIA. I know that LEAP uses OSeMOSYS to solve the optimization problem. Therefore, I've heard that LEAP creates a suitable .txt model file for OSeMOSYS model. Can someone tell me where this suitable .TXT file is saved? I don't find it.

    Hi Metin,

LEAP uses OSeMOSYS as an algorithm to perform its transformation module optimization calculations, but does not provide a facility for viewing other OSeMOSYS files graphically. This means that it is not possible to directly import Utopia.dat into LEAP.

The text file that you're looking for (created by LEAP, for input into OSeMOSYS) is found in the area folder, which for Freedonia, you'll usually find in Documents\LEAP2011 Areas\Freedonia\. Look for files named opdata*.txt, where * is replaced by an integer that corresponds to each of the scenarios for which optimization is being conducted. Similarly, the opresults*.txt files are generated by OSeMOSYS, and are read back into LEAP. To know for sure which file corresponds to which scenario, you'll have to open them (the name of the scenario is included in the header of each).

Incidentally, your questions are perfectly relevant here, but for specific OSeMOSYS-related questions, we maintain a (slightly less active) forum here, for such questions:

    http://www.energycommunity.org/default.asp?action=10&fid=104

Hope this helps, and welcome to the forums!

    Taylor

    Hello Taylor,

    Thanks for your precious help.
    I don't find the utopia file "optresults*.txt".

Maybe I don't run the script correctly.
For instance, I open Freedonia on LEAP.
Then I just press on the button "results," after that I need to wait some second until to get the result.
However, once I go to Documents\LEAP2011 Areas\Freedonia\. I find nothing.
    Do I proceed correctely???

By the way, I perform an opdata search on all my PC, but I find nothing.

That's what I get in my folder:

    Hi Metin,

Just to clarify - you will not find any Utopia file in LEAP's installation directories - this is a sample dataset that is provided for use with OSeMOSYS only, and is quite different from a LEAP area.

You will only find opdata*.txt and opresults*.txt in area folders for which optimization has been enabled. So, you are generally looking in the correct place, but Freedonia (one of the basic training areas that is installed with LEAP) does not perform any optimization, hence you won't find any OSeMOSYS files in it.

Try Exercise Six, detailed in our Training Materials here:
    http://www.energycommunity.org/default.asp?action=42

This is also pre-installed with LEAP (the name of the area is 'Optimization Exercise') - open it up, calculate results, and then check the corresponding directory.

    Hope this helps,

    Taylor
