    Dear all,

I am a student doing Energy modeling for Basque Country using LEAP as a tool. I would appreciate if I get some answers to my question:

    1) Are there any previous experience in energy modeling for regions using LEAP ? examples if available ?

    2) I do have a list of industries in Basque country, with type of fuels and their energy intensity for each industry.

What I don't have is the saturation of each fuel and industrial production for each.
How I should move forward in industry sector based on these data ? or its important to get other info ?

    Thank you very much

    Hi Sultan,

At some point, you will need to identify the saturation (or shares) of each fuel in the input energy mixture for each of your industries - this is important. These fuel saturations may be '100%' (meaning that each fuel is required for every unit of industrial output), but you'll need to make that assumption.

Industrial production of each fuel is less of a concern, since if the fuel is not produced in the region, you can always set LEAP to import it.

This hints at one of the issues you will come across while conducting regional modeling, from my own experience (although I am unable to provide you with a LEAP example). Many of the fuels consumed in the embedded region may me imported from the larger region, and conversely, some of the fuels generated in Basque Country (i.e. any electricity generation) may not necessarily be consumed there.

When doing your demand modeling you may also find that conducting a simple, national-level model helps you to fill in gaps, for which you have difficulty finding data specific to Basque Country itself.

You mentioned only industrial demand - but have you thought about other sectors (commercial or agricultural, as well as household demand and transportation)?

You may also find the following link useful - this is a starter document intended to address many different data requirements, but it will help guide your data collection nonetheless:

    Hope this helps,

    Taylor

    Hi Taylor,

Thank you for your comments. Yes indeed I thought about other sectors. I don't have problems in transportation sector. When it comes to households and industry, I would appreciate if you can explain more how to set / find respective saturation data for end use or of fuels ?

    Hi Sultan,

I'm afraid this isn't a very specific question. Do you mean repositories of basic energy-related data? To start, you could try the IEA's Energy Balance tables, or the UN's Energy Statistics Database:

    http://www.iea.org/statistics/
    http://unstats.un.org/unsd/energy/edbase.htm

As for how to set saturation data in LEAP, I think you should work through our online training exercises - specifically Modules One and Two, which are available here:

    http://www.energycommunity.org/default.asp?action=42

This will introduce you to LEAP's various demand modeling methods.

    Does that help?

    Thanks Taylor,

When modeling service and agriculture sectors. Are there any special consideration ?

    Hi Sultan,

I'm afraid that unless you ask a more specific question, I can't really help you very much! Any special considerations would depend strongly on the region being modeled.

to be specific, in the service sector, I have energy consumption for different types of fuels used. Now, to calcualte the energy intensity, I should determine the activity level. How would the activity level be specified , services value added should be used ?

    Sultan,

This choice is up to you, and up to the data to which you have access. Value added is one way to do it, if you're talking about a sector with all services combined. But it you have sectoral data as well, then you should use sectoral activity metrics: number of goods sold, number of customers served, number of square meters of office space, whatever is most appropriate.
