    Dear Sir/Madam,

I am working on developing LEAP model for Kraft pulp mills. Kraft mills generate a waste chemical liquid known as "Black Liquor" which is burnt onsite to generate electricity and steam in co-generation process.

    My question is:

If I show black liquor co-generation plant in transformation sector with black liquor as feed stock, is there a way to connect this black liquor to pulp mill in demand section or I have to add another pulp plant in transformation sector showing conversion of wood to black liquor?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Umar,

The choice to add another transformation module below electricity generation depends on the resource requirement accounting you want to do. Without an additional module, the black liquor requirements from your cogeneration plant will be passed onto the Resource branches of your tree where they will be met with imports or domestic production. To model domestic production in the Resources branches, you might connect the "Yield" variable for your Black Liquor fuel to the pulp mill's demand using an expression with branch references. Have a look here for some advice about building expressions:

However if you choose to include a module converting wood to black liquor, then you will instead see an additional resource requirement for wood.

Note that the black liquor cogeneration process under your Transformation branches will be used to meet the electricity and heat requirements of your whole area - not just your pulp mill. A simple way around this may be to instead model the mill's cogeneration plant as a reduction in electricity and heat demand, instead of on the supply side of your model.

Just a few thoughts - hope this helps!
