Topic: Why is there biomass import? Subscribe | Previous | Next

    Hello

In my energy model, biomass is a local resource and there is abundant supply. When I view Energy balance, I am getting a very very small amount of biomass import? Why is so? In my demand branch, for household there is biogas for cooking. Biogas appears as my secondary resource. Biogas is locally produced, but for this,I have not specified anywhere on the model.
How do I not get any biomass import? How to add biogas production locally (if this is necessary to stop biomass import)?

    Appreciate your assistance.

    Hi Ravita,

By "abundant supply", do you mean that you have set the Yield (found in the Resources branches) to a sufficiently high number? Or is biomass an output fuel which is produced by one of your transformation modules?

If biogas is locally produced, then you should include a transformation module which produces biogas in your model (using the necessary processes and feedstock fuels). Since it is technically a secondary resource, you are not able to specify a primary yield for this fuel.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Taylor

Yes, I have set the Yield of biomass to sufficiently high value (1 Trillion GJ). Currently, in my transformation module, I have T&D and Electricity Generation and the output fuel here is electricity.

For adding biogas production in Transformation module, this will be added on top of the T&D module (Is this correct?). When adding Biogas Prodn module, what module properties should I choose? I tried a few different ways of module properties for adding biogas production. Even when I specify the capacity and production of biogas in my Transformation module, there is no change in Energy Balance values for Import of Biomass. I still get the relatively small value of biomass import. Do you have any idea why this is so?

    Thanks

    Hi Ravita,

The correct position of the Biogas Production module depends on which other modules may require biogas from it. For example, if you insert the module *above* your Electricity Generation module, then it will not operate to meet the biogas feedstock requirements for electric generation. This would cause biogas to be imported. If you insert the Biogas Production module at the very bottom of your Transformation branches, then it will operate last, and will attempt to meet any biogas remaining requirements from all of the modules downstream.

If you still see biogas being imported after you've finalized the position of the module, are you certain that the module has enough available capacity to meet its requirements? Further, are the process(es) in the module actually being dispatched to meet those requirements?
