Hi, has anyone ever seen the Out of Memory Error?

    Hello Bri,

We have seen some people getting out of memory errors when working on large data sets, especially those that have large numbers of scenarios and which use optimization. I am working on a few improvements that should address this issue including (1) reducing memory use during calculations of multiple scenarios and (2) moving LEAP to 64 bits (from its current 32 bit platform) which will allow the software to access FAR more memory. I hope to have an experimental version with these capabilities in a few weeks.

    Best wishes,

    Charlie

I have downloaded the 64-bit version, but it triggers another error in LEAP. Therefore, I went back to the 32-version and has worked fine until today I get the "out of memory" error. The error appeared after I changed the yearly shape data. Basically, they are with the same time slice, but different values of load data. When I clicked the results tab, LEAP became unresponsive and after sometime the error message appeared. Then, I restarted LEAP and opened another area, which I have successfully simulated the day before. To my surprise, when I clicked the result tab, instead of seeing the results, I received the same error message ("out of memory"). I restarted my laptop and restarted LEAP to open another area, but still the same error message occurred. This is strange because the error also occurred for the areas that have been calculated before. In the normal situation, for the areas that have been calculated before, LEAP will show the result immediately.

Could anyone help me with this?

    Regards,
    Kamia

    Hi Kamia -

Sorry you're having these problems. Can you tell me:
    1. When opening a separate LEAP area that had successfully been calculated before, do you know for sure if that area had been saved after its last successful calculation? If not, and the area begins to calculate, do you see the calculation progress dialog before the "out of memory" error?
    2. Are you able to calculate a single scenario? In the Scenario Manager, try unselecting all but your baseline scenario, for example, and then returning to Results.
    3. Just to be certain, please try manually stopping the LEAP process (Ctrl-Shift-Esc) to make sure an errant LEAP process is not taking up memory.
Also, can you also tell us about the other error you're seeing, when using the 64-bit version?

    Thanks,
    Taylor

    Dear Kamia,

Just to add to Taylor's note: I am working on a new version of LEAP that has a significantly smaller memory footprint than the current version (for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions). That version is still a few weeks away but hopefully it can help address some of the issues you are facing. Meantime, please do get back to us about the other problem you had when using the 64-bit version. If you have a very large model that is probably your best option.

    Best,

    Charlie

    Dear Taylor,
    Thanks for your response.
    1. I did not see the calculation process, LEAP seemed to be unresponsive and after sometime the error message came out.
    2. I did unchecked more complicated scenarios, then LEAP can show the results. But when I try to view the results of a more complicated scenario, the message appeared again. However, I managed to solve this by unchecked some results option. I only choose the results that most important for my analysis. I do the setting in the basic parameter--->results to save.

    Regards,
    Kamia

    Dear Charles,

Thank you very much for the works that you and your team have done. I find LEAP very useful.

Regarding the error in the 64-bit version, if I remember correctly, it said "Number too large"

    Regards,
    Kamia

    Hi everyone,

I get the same Error message. Even when I decrease the number of time slices I get the error message. I did not have this problem before the latest update. I tried both the 32 and 64 bit versions of LEAP and I still cannot get any result. In other models I can see the results but the results have already been calculated. Can you propose something on how I can fix this problem?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Ioannis,

If the model was working before the update, then I recommend doing a clean install of the new version. Do this by deleting LEAP through Add/Remove Programs, and then installing LEAP from the setup file downloaded through the LEAP website (https://www.energycommunity.org/default.asp?action=download).

In addition to limiting time slices, I would also try to reduce the number of scenarios calculated (go to General --> Scenarios and uncheck the scenarios).

If you continue to get an error, feel free to send your backed up .LEAP file to leap@sei.org, and we can take a look to see what the problem is.

    Thanks,
    Emily

    Hi Emily,

Sorry for late response. I installed again LEAP but I get the same error. Also I reduced the time slices from 52 weeks to 4 quarters and still LEAP stops operating. I'm sending an email with my file.

    Thanks once again
