Topic: Study the effect of banning certain types of carsSubscribe | Previous | Next

    Hi!

I want to study the effect a ban on certain types of vehicles, e.g. diesel cars, will have on air pollution emissions in a city. Since I only can control sales with my scenarios, I have not been able to simulate a ban in the future. The only way I see is to change the data in current accounts. Is there an approach I could use do achieve this, using negative sales or something?

Also, is there a way to (with a scenario) add vehicles of different vintages to the stock?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Jimmy,

As you've noted, it is not possible to change the existing stock information in a scenario, but through Current Accounts. However, I think there are a couple ways to simulate the ban of a certain vehicle.

One way to simulate the ban would be to use the "Scrappage" variable to indicate the number of vehicles that are banned each year. Through this variable, you can zero out any stock and sales for a vehicle type. For this particular scenario to work, you will first need to run the Reference scenario to figure out the annual device stocks for each vehicle type that is banned. Then, enter these values as an Interp function under the Scrappage variable under the diesel ban scenario. For more information on the Scrappage variable, refer to the following page in the User Guide: https://www.energycommunity.org/Help/Demand/Scrappage.htm

Another way to do this is to add a new "Region" and pretend it is another scenario. This way you can inherit the characteristics of the main region, but also change the Current Accounts in the new region to alter the existing vehicle stock, or hide certain branches from the calculations. To add the new region, go to General --> Region, click the green plus button on the top left of the dialog box, enter a name for the region/scenario, and then ensure you change the "Inherit Expressions from Region" column accordingly.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Emily,

Thanks for the quick reply! Sounds like those workarounds will solve the problem, I will look into them and decide which one I'll go for.

    Best regards,
