    Hello,

I am a beginner in LEAP and I am trying to build a very simple model for the fossil fuel sector. I included all the oil refineries and Natural Gas Processing Units (NGPU) existing in my region, but when I run the base year, demand for Natural Gas skips the NGPU and Gas is supplied by imported Gas, for some reason. You Can see in the Sankey that all the transformation units that are unused are left on the top right side of the diagram.

Another thing that happens is that not oall refineries are used, but I think that has to do with the dispatch rule I am using.

Could you help me with that?
    Pedro

    Hi Pedro,

Thanks for your question. It is likely that these processes aren't generating outputs due to missing information. I recommend reviewing the inputs for the oil refineries and NGPUs in Analysis View, including the following variables:

    • Ensure that the Exogenous Capacity/Endogenous Capacity, Maximum Availability and Process Efficiency variables are greater than 0.
    • If the First Simulation Year is not equal to the BaseYear, then make sure you have entered Historical Production data for the years between the Base Year and the First Simulation Year.
    • If you are using the PercentShare dispatch rule, ensure that the Process Share variable is greater than 0%.
    Hope this helps,
    Emily

    Hello Emily,

Thank you very much for your information. I had a very large increase in outcome quality after your suggestions. I have a new question now: Since I am modeling a contry's state, is it possible to indicate what is important from abroad and what is imported from other states within the country?

Thank you so much for you support,

    Pedro

    Hi Pedro,

I'm very sorry for the delay in responding.

While LEAP doesn't enable you to specify the source of an import, there are different ways that you can show a fuel import source. One way is to add a new transformation module that represents fuel imports and by creating a separate process for each fuel source. Then, enable capacity data in the Module Properties Dialog Box (right-click the module folder to access this). After setting up the module processes, specify an exogenous capacity equal to the annual import quantity for each process/fuel source. Make sure that the efficiency and availability is 100% and also specify the process share.

You could also create a new fuel to represent each fuel source. To do this, go to the Fuels dialog box (General menu --> Fuels), add a new fuel (for example, "Natural Gas from Abroad") and then reference this fuel as the feedstock fuel for your module processes.

An example branch structure of a natural gas import module is attached. I've also included the resulting Sankey Diagram including the natural gas import sources.

Another way to specify fuel import sources is by adding a new region to your model and then enabling regional trade through Basic Params --> Calculations. Once enabled, you can input In-Area Import/Export Fractions to show the level of imports from one region in your model to another region.

    Hope this helps!
    Emily
