Topic: Natural Gas as primary and secondary energySubscribe | Previous | Next

    Hello,

I am here again with a very basic question. I am sorry to bother you with this, but I am realy excited about LEAP and what I can do with it. I looked for this in "Help", but I had no luck.

I am trying to split the transformation sector into units of refineries and NGPU (natural gas processing units). The state that I am currently modeling has 5 refineries and 2 UPGN. With the refineries I had no issues because it uses crude oil and produces other totally different products. With natural gas, however, the UPGN's are consuming Natural Gas from each other, since Natural gas is the primary and secondary energy from those transformation units. My question is: How can I force both UPGN to consume Natural Gas from the primary source, not from each other?

    Thank you,

    Pedro

    Hi Pedro,

Typically we group technologies which produce the same output fuels in the same module. This avoids the issue you are having. Within the module, you can include a number of processes to represent different plants. Please see the attached screenshot for an example.

An alternative method would be to create a new fuel to represent the unprocessed natural gas. This can then be set as the feedstock fuel for the UPGN's so that the primary and secondary fuels are no longer the same. The steps for doing so are as follows:
    • To create a new fuel, open the fuels dialog box through the main menu: General --> Fuels. Then, click on the green plus (+) button to add a new fuel, enter a name (say "Unprocessed Natural Gas") and select the "Copy from existing fuel" option to copy the fuel properties of natural gas (or you can change the properties if you wish).
    • To switch the feedstock fuel for the UPGN process, go into the Feedstock Fuel folder under the UPGN process branch, right-click the natural gas branch and select properties. Then, change the feedstock fuel to your new fuel.
    Hope this helps!
